Overview

The canton was formed on 30 April 1969. On 1 March 2008, the Colombian army crossed the neighbouring border, entered the municipal territory of Putumayo, and kill there Raúl Reyes, one of the leaders of the FARC guerilla.
The flag is shown, graphically, on the top of the front page of the municipal website.
