Description of the flag

The municipal council launched on 26 November 2009 (Decree No 2409) a public contest entitled "Lanús tendra su bandera" (Lanús shall have its flag).

The contest is opened to all educational institutes (secondary and third cycles) of the municipality. The deadline is 16 July 2010. The proposed flags should be rectabgular, in 2:3 or 1:2 proportions. The design should be simple, excluding letters, mottos, numbers and all kinds of elements not easily reproduced on the two sides of the flag. The obverse and the reverse of the flag should be identical. It is recommended not to use logotypes, coats of arms and drawings.

The colors and elements of the flag should be easy to identify from a distance. Elements airing a belliquous or political ideology are banned. A jury made of the Executive Council of the Bicentenary [of the Town), of invited members (including a plastician) and of Provinical Educational Authorities, will release on 30 July a short list of five entrees. A more restricted jury will select on 9 August the two final contenders. The ultimate jury will select the flag of Lanús on 18 August. The winner is to be proclaimed on 20 August.

The Decree includes two additiona documents about the history and heraldry of Lanús.

As reported in "Info Región", 6 October 2010, the contest seems to have been managed as expected, with some delay, though. Some 200 proposals were submitted, of which 76 were deemed eligible on 20 September. The five-entree shortlist was released on 1 October. The winner will be proclaimed on 12 October.

The contest was organized by the Municipality through the Ministry of Social Policy, Culture and Education to create a flag to represent Lanús and its inhabitants. The contest was opened to all educational institutes (secondary and third cycles) of the municipality. According to the decree, the proposal will be implemented in secondary and special schools of the partido.

According to the website La Noticia 1 (published on November 17th 2010), the flag of the "Partido" of Lanús has been chosen. The winning project was the work of Baez Brian Roland, aged 15.

"184 designs have been submitted, of which 76 followed the guidelines given in the Terms and Conditions of Participation and were admitted to the contest. A total of 235 students, individually or in groups, have submitted their ideas. The jury was composed of the Executive Council of the Bicentennial, municipal and legal local authorities, invited guests and representatives of the educational field, who were in charge of pre-selections and the final decision.

According to reports from the municipal website, the young author explains the reason for the choice of colors and elements as follows: red symbolizes progress, white, cultural activities, the black gear, trade and industry: Yellow refers to the sun, strength, life, freedom. the railway represents communication, green, agricultural activities and the plain on which the city grew, the edge refers to recreational activities and sports; and blue represents the provincial and national belonging. The municipal mayor, Darío Díaz Pérez, sent his congratulations to all participants and especially the winner, who will take pride of being the author of the municipal insignia."
