About the flag

This flag was adopted in March 5th 1987, by means of the decree 879, published in March 13th 1987.
Jaume Ollé, 20 Aug 2000, translated by António Martins

The current Entre Ríos provincial flag is locally known as Ramírez’ flag. In the day of Ramírez and Artigas it was known as the Federation Flag, as it stood for a movement, not for a person.

Historical local usage of the federal flag

The flag of the Federal Legue was hoisted for the first time in Entre Ríos by the federalist chieftain Eusebio Hereñu in 1815.03.13, at the Paraná riverside, after defeating General Eustoquio A. Díaz Velez, governor of Santa Fe. His son and successor López Jordan kept on using the flag locally.

In 1822.03.12, local leader Lucio Mansilla, adopts as a provincial flag the national flag with the new provincial coat of arms, adopted at the same time. This flag was abandoned in 1824, when Mansilla left the leadership.

Provincial flag of 1833-1853

[Flag of Entre Ríos, 1833] image by Jaume Ollé, 22 Aug 2000

Entre Ríos had no official flag until 1833.12.28, when Governor General Pascual Echague adopted a new provincial flag. This should show the arms approved in 1822, but this was rarely done, usually variants of the arms were used. This flag lasted till 1853, when the Confederation was created. Though it is said that López Jordan still used it in his 1870 revolution.

The ratio of the flag is 1:2. It is a horizontal tricolour. The hoist half shows celeste over white over celeste, the fly half red over white over red. In the centre of the flag is a faced yellow sun with sixteen rays.

In theory (according to the 1833 provincial law), this 1833 historical flag should have had the provincial coat of arms of Entre Ríos at center. However there were several variants of the flag at the same time:

  • Provincial coat of arms at center.
  • Argentine National coat of arms at center.
  • Part of the Argentine national coat of arms at center.
  • Sun (like the Argentine national flag).
  • Texts (for military variants of the flag).
  • Plain flags.
These flag designs were used mostly from 1833 to 1853, and then in the early 1870s during rebellions led by Ricardo López Jordán (Jr.).
Francisco Gregoric, 01 May 2008
