Townsville

The Townsville region, with a population of approx. 160,000, is widely regarded as the capital of North Queensland. Townsville is located approx. 1500 km north of Brisbane (Queensland's capital city) by road. Townsville was founded in 1864 as a port for the fledgling pastoral industry in North Queensland. Following the discovery of gold in the immediate hinterland at Ravenswood and then Charters Towers, the town developed into the principal centre and de facto capital of North Queensland. The town was named in 1866 after Robert Towns, who provided financial assistance to the new settlement.

On 16 September 1901 the Australian Flag was unveiled and proclaimed for the first time at a ceremony at Town Hall in Townsville. The ceremony was conducted by the first Governor-General of Australia, the Earl of Hopetoun.

Townsville was proclaimed a City under the new 'Local Authorities Act' in 1902.

Flag

The Townsville Bulletin, 8 November 2006, reports that "the Townsville flag will fly proudly over the Rockhampton City Council building for a week after Townsville was yesterday declared the winner of the inaugural City of Origin 10,000 Step Challenge." As part of the challenge, Rockhampton City Council will have to fly the Townsville flag for a week.

The flag of Townsville, as shown on a photograph in the article, is blue with a yellow border (except at hoist) and the seal of the city in the middle.
