Han Pijesak is said to have been first mentioned in 1895, around a former han (caravanserail, roadside inn) that had been existing there at least since the 17th century.

Flag of Han Pijesak

The flag (photo; photo, municipal bulletin, January 2010) of Han Pijesak is white, vertical flag, in proportions close to 3:5, with the coat of arms in the centre and two lined blue inscription in Cyrillic, reading "Opština Han Pijesak".

The coat of arms of Han Pisejak is prescribed by Decision Odluka o obliku i sadržaju simbola opštine Han-Pijesak, adopted on 20 April 2001 by the Municipal Assembly, as follows:

The design for the symbols of the Municipality of Han Pijesak, [delivered] under the code name "GROS", is adopted, and it is prescribed that the symbol is in the shape of a coat of arms, and that it contains:
- a shield, as the central part of the coat of arms, with four fields. In the top right field is a cross with four white firesteels on a red background. In the top left field is a motif with the top of two mountains (Igrište and Žep). Diagonally from the two fields is set the symbol of the Karađorđević castle, marked white on a green background. In the bottom left field are six horizontal stripes in turn white and blue, symbolizing the healthy mountainous climate.
- On the left and right of the shield are two wolves, representing the big game, and two flags next to which are branches of fir and pine.
- Under the shield in the central part is a golden crown with a red background, [symbolically] linking to the castle motif.
- From the bottom, the coat of arms ends with a ribbon, in its central part it is inscribed the name of the municipality, on the left the year of establishment of the municipality, and on the right the date of holyday and christened celebration [Krsna slava, the feast of the patron saint in the Serbian Orthodox tradition] of the municipality.
- All the elements except the flags on the poles, are set in a rectangle in proportions 1:1.618, providing harmony to the coat of arms.
