The flag was horizontaly black - white - red,
representing three main rivers in the land - Black,
White and Red Volta. It was addopted on 1959.12.09.

The perfect similarity between the Upper Volta flag and
the former German Empire flag
(except the 2:3 vs. 3:5 proportion) is a pure coincidence.
The flag of Upper Volta had been officialy adopted 9 December
1959 [smi75b]. Official name
of the country was République de Haute-Volta.
