About the Flag of Pão de Açúcar

The flag of the city is colors green, white and sky blue. In the center is the coat of arms of the City, representing the authority of the people in the Municipal Government. The green color represents the fields and forests where the flocks of birds sing, and nature perpetually overflows with affection. The white color represents peace. This beautiful, immense picture is capped by the endless heavenly blue thus transforming all the inspiration of the poets, and demonstrating the existence of the power of God. The yellow color represents the twilight when the sun declines toward the horizon, shining with the light of day and illuminating all the composition of the nature.

The municipality of Pão de Açúcar (23,809 inhabitants in 2010; 659 sq. km) is located in southwestern Alagoas, 230 km of Maceió.

The municipal symbols, designed by Pedro Lúcio Rocha, are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 394 of 10 July 1969.

On the coat of arms is represented Cavalete Hill, on which is erected the statue of Christ the Redeemer*, symbolizing the inhabitants' faith and peace, as well as the mountains surrounding the White Town. On the image appears also river São Francisco, representing human life that relies on water. The arms also show three fishes, a rice panicle and a cotton branch, representing the economy of the municipality. The name of the municipality is written on a pink ribbon, a color symbolizing different local characteristics.

*This statue of Christ the Redeemer is a copy of the famous statue watching the Bay of Rio de Janeiro from the top of the Sugarloaf Mountain. Pão de Açúcar indeed means "sugarloaf" in Portuguese, which is probably the rationale for the erection of the statue there. Made by the local sculptor João Lisboa, the statue was inaugurated on 29 January 1950. It is 14.80 m tall, including a 4.80 m pedestal (to be compared with the figures of the Rio statue, 39.6 m and 9.5 m).
