About the Flag

A blue flag with the arms centred.

Official site at http://www.paraopeba.mg.gov.br/
Dirk Schönberger, 17 August 2010

The flag and arms were designed in 1910 by Avelino Fóscolo, Caetano Mascarenhas and Sabino de Paula Freitas.

The flag is blue with the municipal arms in the middle. The coat of arms is horizontally divided by a blue (darker than the flag background) stripe representing River Paraopeba, and vertically by a thin black line. The first and fourth quarters are vermilion, symbolizing faith, courage and work; the second and third quarters are green, symbolizing agriculture. The first quarter is charged with a cross, a crown and a hut, representing God, the fatherland and the family. The second quarter is charged with a hoe, a corn cob, a sugarcane and other agricultural products. The third quarter is charged with an oxen head and a spindle, representing cattle-breeding and textile industry, respectively. The fourth quarter is charged with a cornucopia keeping the income of the work accomplished with faith, courage and love. The shield is surmounted by a mural crown. A white scroll placed below the shield bears the municipal motto, in Latin, "Fide Amor Labor sic ... ad astra"

The flag is shown on a photo of the Mayor at http://www.paraopeba.mg.gov.br/palavra.htm.
