The municipality of Doutor Camargo (5,829 inhabitants in 2010; 11,828 ha) is
located 360 km north-west of Curitiba.
Doutor Camargo was established in
the late 1940s by the Companhia de Melhoramentos Norte do Paraná to develop
coffee cultivation.
The municipality of Doutor Camargo was established by
State Law No. 4,842 promulgated on 2 March 1964, separating from Ivatuba, and
inaugurated on 14 December 1964.
The municipality was named for medical
doctor Antônio Cândido Camargo (1864-1947), who studied in Geneva and then
settled in Limeira (São Paulo), where he introduced modern surgery in Brazil. In
1883, he was the only doctor staying in the town during the yellow fever
epidemic, also replacing the Mayor who had left. In 1907, Camargo moved to São
Paulo, where he was among the founders of Instituto Paulista de Medicina,
Brazil's first hospital equipped for surgery. He was appointed in 1916 Professor
of Clinical Surgery at the São Paulo Faculty of Medicine.
During his idle
time, Camargo used to explore North Paraná, mostly for hunting. He used to bring
in his luggage all kinds of drugs and remedies, which he distributed for free to
the population.

The
towers represent the first created municipality in the world.
The key
represents the town's patron saint, St. Peter.
Coffee was, at the time, the
main source of income for the municipality.
The symbol of medicine recalls
the town's namesake, who was a medical doctor.
