About the Flag

The municipality of Indianópolis (8,693 inhabitants in 2015; 83,387 ha) is located 550 km west of Curitiba and 60 km south-east of Uberlândia.

The flag and arms of Indianópolis are described in a document written by vexillologist and heraldist Arthur Luponi, dated 24 November 1976 and kept in the municipal archives. The descriptions are probably included in a Municipal Law.

The flag of the municipality of Indianópolis, in rectangular shape with the longest size in the horizontal dimension, shall be in proportion 14 units in width on 20 units in length.
The flag's rectangular field is divided into five horizontal stripes, the middle stripe, red, being twice wider than the upper and lower ones, which are blue and separated from the central stripe by two narrower white stripes.
In the center of the red stripe, both on the flag's obverse and reverse, are featured eight yellow stylized arrows, of the same size, equidistant from each other and pointing outside, four in cross and four in saltire. The first and fifth arrows have their heads reaching the edges of the red stripe.
The proportions of the flag shall be those of the national flag. The color shades are cerulean blue for the upper and lower stripes; snow white for the narrower, intermediate stripes; golden yellow for the eight stylized arrows; and bright red for the central stripe.

Cerulean blue is a symbol of justice, loyalty, perseverance, dignity, incorruptible firmness, perfection... (Guelfi, 64; Asêncio, 63; Ronchetti, 126).
Snow white is the particular symbol of the reigning spirit of peace and friendship among the inhabitants of Indianópolis. It is the color that replaces argent on flags, a heraldic symbol of purity, beauty, happiness, equity, integrity, truth, peace, friendship... (Guelfi, 51; Asêncio, 61).
Bright red is the symbol of courage, valor, gallantry, audacity, domination, bravery, honor, charity... (Guelfi, 459; Asêncio, 62).

The eight stylized arrows have a double meaning:
a) They resemble the forestry nucleus that initially populated this region of Paraná. The toponym Indianópolis, of hybrid formation, originated from "indiano" / "índio", "native", and "polis", Greek for "a city". It was coined from the name of the river that bathes the municipality, Rio dos Índios (Indian River).
b) The eight stylized arrows evoke the eight pioneers who cleared and were the first settlers of the region: Arnaldo Rodrigues Alves, Benedito José Barbosa, Antonio José Barão, José Martins, Eliseo Céfalo Linares, Joaquim Lavos André, Felisberto Nunes Gonçalves, and Nelson Borges de Medeiros.
Yellow, the color that replaces or in flags, is the heraldic symbol of faith, love, joy, wealth, strength, power, splendor, glory, sovereignty, solidity, prosperity... (Guelfi, 291 and 396; Asêncio, 60; Ronchetti, 192).

The coat of arms of the municipality of Indianópolis is composed of a Samnite (or modern French) shield divided per pale azure (blue), argent and azure (blue), with a bordure gules (red) charged with eight five-pointed stars argent arranged 3-2-2-1, one of them pointing upward.
The lateral quarters are each charged with a caduceus or, centered. The wider, central quarter, features an Indian's head proper represented in profile and facing the right side, crowned with a feather headdress proper (red, yellow, green, white, blue, pink etc),
The chief argent is charged with a roundel azure (blue), centered, superimposed with the arms of the Bulhões family, recalling the glorious Portuguese thaumaturge St. Anthony (of Lisbon or Padua), who is the patron saint of the municipality of Indianópolis; they consist of a shield argent charged with a Greek cross gules (red) pommeted with acorns vert (green).
The dimidiated base is vert (green) with two narrow, sinuous and equidistant fesses argent running all along the shield's length.
The shield is surmounted by a mural crown composed of five visible towers argent ports and windows sable (black).
The shield is supported by two branches of coffee fructed proper, one dexter and one sinister tied beneath the shield.
The scroll gules (red) is inscribed with the toponym "INDIANÓPOLIS" argent in capital letters like Franklin Gothic, surrounded by dates "2-2-1967" and "14-12-1968", dexter and sinister, respectively.
