The municipality of Itaipulândia (9,027 inhabitants in 2020; 33,517 ha) is
located on the border with Paraguay, 630 km west of Curitiba.
Itaipulândia was settled in 1961 by colonists coming from Santa Catarina and Rio
Grande do Sul, who acquired plots in Guairaçá. The district of Aparecida do
Oeste was established within the municipality of São Miguel de Iguaçu by State
Law No. 7,438 promulgated on 29 December 1980, and elevated a municipality by
State Law No. 9,908 promulgated on 19 March 1992.
The building of the Itaipu
Dam in the 1970s caused the flooding of 50% of the municipality's arable lands,
which is partially compensated by royalties paid by Itaipu Binacional.

The flag of Itaipulândia is celestial blue with a
white triangle placed along the hoist without reaching its edges, separated from
the blue fields by two green and yellow chevrons and charged with the municipal
