The municipality of Matelândia (17,775 inhabitants in 2018; 63,975 ha) is
located 560 km west of Curitiba.
The flag and arms of Matelândia are
prescribed by Municipal Law No. 1,021 promulgated on 11 November 1996.
Article 3.
The municipal flag shall be rectangular, green (vert), yellow
(gold) and red (gules), in proportions 14 units in hoist width on 20 units in
length, comprising of:
I - Three equal fields (rectangular) in the horizontal
direction.
II - At the center a white circle where the municipal coat of arms
is applied.
Article 4.
The symbology of the municipal flag obeys the
following general rule.
I - The upper, green (vert) rectangle symbolizes
hope, the freedom of nature, the beautiful meadows, the rich agriculture and
forests of the National Park.
II - The central, yellow (or) rectangle) is the
symbol of nobleness, magnitude and wealth.
III - The lower, red rectangle
symbolizes energy, strength, courage and triumph.
IV - The white circle
symbolizes the peace, serenity, religious spirit and greatness of Matelândia's
people. It represents the town as the seat of the municipality.
V - In the
center of the white circle, the municipal coat of arms represents the municipal
government.
Article 6.
The municipal coat of arms has the following
symbolic interpretation:
I - The classic Flemish-Iberian coat of arms used to
represent the municipal arms has its origins in Germany and was introduced in
the Iberian Peninsula during the struggles against the Moors. It now appears in
Portugal armorials, notably in domains' heraldry. Inherited in Brazilian
heraldry, it evokes the colonizing race and the main builder of the nation.
II - The mural crown that surmounts the shield is the universal symbol of
domains' arms; argent (silver) with eight towers, only four of them visible in
perspective view, it classifies a 3rd rank town, that is, the seat of a
municipality. The red (gules) lighting, due to the heraldic meaning of the
color, is consistent with the attributes of pioneers, pathfinders and community
leaders.
III - The first quarter features along the horizon forests and the
initiation of coffee plantations by pioneers and explorers, a plow, a manual
tool still being widely used in agriculture, and branches of yerba mate, one of
the pioneer and modern sources of income in the municipality.
IV - The left
quarter features a book, an inkpot and a pen, and a terrestrial globe,
symbolizing education and culture in the municipality of Matelândia;
V - At
the center of the shield is an escutcheon featuring the map of the municipality
of Matelândia.
VI - The lower left quarter features a tractor driven by a
farmer, in the background rich agricultural areas and plantations, and the sun
that illuminate with its rays all the parts of the territory of Matelândia.
VII - The lower right quarter features an ox, a horse, a pig and birds,
symbolizing livestock in the municipality.
VIII - The irregular triangle
features a winged helmet that heraldically symbolizes the rich commerce of the
municipality of Matelândia.
IX - The shield is supported by plants of
soybean, maize, wheat and beans, fructed proper, recalling the main products
from the generous and fertile soil, mainstay of the municipal economy.
X -
The gears symbolize the municipality's industries.
XI - The blue (azure)
scroll is inscribed with the words "PEACE, WORK AND PROGRESS", words that enrich
and ennoble the people of Matelândia.
XII - The red (gules) scroll is
inscribed with "MATELÂNDIA, 25.07.60, 28.11.60", being the date, day, month and
year of creation of the municipality, and the date of political and
administrative emancipation of Matelândia, respectively.
a) The red scroll
symbolizes dedication, patriotic love, audacity, intrepidity, courage and
valiance.
b) Argent (silver) is the symbol of peace, friendship, work,
prosperity, purity and religious spirit.
c) Yellow (or / gold) is the symbol
of glory, splendor, greatness, wealth and sovereignty.
d) Black (sable)
symbolizes prudence, moderation, austerity and firmness of character.
e) Blue
(azure) symbolizes nobleness, justice, perseverance, zeal, loyalty, recreation
and beauty.
f) Green (vert) symbolizes faith, hope, freedom and the strength
of the nobleness.
