The municipality of Quatro Pontes (3,803 inhabitants in 2010; 11,439 ha) is
located i500 km west of Curitiba. According to its Human Development Index
(0.851), Quatro Pontes is the third most developed town in Paraná. On 20
September 2010, a grandstand collapsed during a car race organized in Quatro
Pontes, injuring more than 100 spectators.
Quatro Pontes was established
in the 1950s by Toledo-based Industrial Madeireira Colonizadora Rio Paraná - S/A
Maripá, which promoted colonization to exploit timber resources. In 1945, the
company purchased property rights from the English Madera del Alto Paraná
company and established colonists from Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina,
mostly of German (90% of the today's inhabitants are of German origin) and
Italian origin.
Quatro Pontes was established by Municipal Law No. 31
promulgated on 31 July 1962 as one of the nine districts of the newly formed
municipality of Marechal Cândido Rondon. In the 1970s, agriculture was
mechanized and soybean, associated with maize and wheat, superseded coffee as
the local main crop; no longer suitable, the 25-ha plots originally allocated to
the first settlers were grouped in bigger estates, causing the exile of
smallholders to Paraguay, Mato Grosso and Rondônia.
The municipality of
Quatro Pontes was established by State Law No. 9,368 promulgated on 13 September
1990 and inaugurated on 1 January 1993.
