The municipality of Santo Antônio da Platina (46,503 inhabitants in 2021:
72,163 ha) is located 375 km north-west of Curitiba.
Santo Antônio da
Platina was first mentioned on a map of the state of Paraná dated 1896. The
origin of the name of the town is obscure. Some say that one of the early
families that settle the place included four Antônios, who were amazed by the
silver shade of the water of the local river, therefore compared with platinum.
A cognate explanation refers to a settler devotee of St. Anthony who made a
similar observation about water. Yet another explanation is related to an old
rumor that the Piedra Bianca (White Stone) mountains were rich in platinum ore,
which was absolutely not the case; the fooled, but fair-play colonists kept the
name related to platinum, though. A more probable but less romantic explanation
is purely administrative: for whatever reason, the municipality of Jacarezinho
named the new settlements for ores: Prata (Silver), Ouro Grande (Greater Gold),
Ourinho (Lesser Gold), and eventually Santo Antônio da Platina.
The district
of Santo Antônio da Platina was established, as part of the municipality of Nova
Alcântara, by Municipal Law No. 1 promulgated on 7 January 1901. The
municipality of Santo Antônio da Platina was established by State Law No. 1,424
promulgated on 31 March 1914, separating from Jacarezinho.
