The municipality of Rafael Godeiro (3,070 inhabitants in 2010; 10,007 ha) is located 350 km south-west of Natal.
Rafael Godeiro was originally the district of Várzea da Caatinga, subsequently renamed Várzea de Santo Antônio, part of the municipality of Patu. The district was renamed Rafael Godeiro, as a tribute to the Mayor of Patu who had established the district. The municipality of Várzea da Caatinga was established by State Law No. 3,001 of 19 February 1963 and inaugurated on 15 April 1964. The municipality was renamed Rafael Godeiro in 1967.
The flag and arms of Rafael Godeiro are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 161 of 5 December 1988. The flag is white with a red cross fimbriated in white and gray, skewed to the fly. Over the intersection of the cross' arms is placed the municipal coat of arms.
