Municipality

The municipality of Bossoroca (6,801 inhabitants in 2018; 15,962 ha) is located 500 km north of Porto Alegre.

Bossoroca is named for the Tupi-Guarani words "iby", "land", and "soroc", "torn", referring to the gullies caused by rain erosion in sandy soils, known in modern Portuguese as "vossorocas". The original name, Boçoroca, was subsequently changed to Bossoroca for the sake of compliance with Portuguese language.

Bossoroca was elevated to the 3rd district of São Luiz Gonzaga by Municipal Law No. 123 promulgated in August 1952.
The municipality of Bossoroca was established by State Law No. 5,058 promulgated on 12 October 1965. Some inhabitants appealed the emancipation, which postponed the inauguration of the new municipality until 4 March 1967.

Bossoroca was the preferred place of the musician Noel Fabrício da Silva, better known as Noel Guarany (1941-1998). Self-taught in Guarani language and music, Guarany often mentioned the town in his songs, mostly related to Gaúcho folklore.
Guarany, who was interred in Bossoroca, is honored in the town by a mausoleum surmounted by a big statue; the musician's archives, including music instruments, letters, photos and documents concealed by the Federal Censorship of the time, are kept in the Town Hall.
