Municipality

The municipality of Gravataí (255,762 inhabitants in 2010, therefore the 6th most populous municipality in the state and the 3rd in Greater Porto Alegre; 46,376 ha) is located 20 km north-east of Porto Alegre. The municipality is composed of the districts of Gravataí (seat), Barro Vermelho (est. by Municipal Decree No. 1,396 issued on 29 December 1977; 7,035 inh.), Ipiranga (est. by Municipal Law No. 1 promulgated on 8 January 1958; 4,894 inh.), Itacolomi (est. by Municipal Law No. 121 promulgated on 16 May 1983; 7,851 inh.) and Morungava (est. by Federal Law. 1,307 promulgated on 31 May 1939; 6,168 inh.).

Gravataí was established in 1763 as Aldeia de Nossa Senhora dos Anjos by Captain Antonio Pinto Carneiros, who "transferred" some 1,000 Guarani natives from the Jesuit missions. José Marcelino de Figueiredo initiated urban planning in 1769, building schools, pottery workshops and a mill. The parish of Aldeia de Nossa Senhora dos Anjos was established in 1795, separating from Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Viamão.
The municipality of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos de Gravataí was established by a Law promulgated on 11 June 1880, separating from Porto Alegre. In the first half of the 20th century, Gravataí became a main producer of cassava flour. The establishment of the General Motors industrial complex on 17 March 997 boosted the development of the town.

About the Flag of Gravataí

The flag and arms of Gravataí are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 181 promulgated on 15 August 1984.

Article 6.
The municipal flag of Gravataí shall be white with the coat of arms described in Article 19 of this Law placed in the flag's geometric center.

Article 7.
In compliance with heraldic rules, the municipal flag shall have the official dimensions adopted for the national flag, that is, 14 units in width on 20 units in length.

Article 19.
The municipal coat of arms of Gravataí has the following heraldic description: Per fess, 1. Silver a blue hill, 2. Red, an open silver book with a quill and ink pot proper above a bow without arrow proper. The shield surmounted by a five-towered silver crown. Beneath the shield a red scroll inscribed in silver with the municipality's name between the date of foundation of Aldeia dos Índios and the date of municipal emancipation.

The coat of arms has the following interpretation: the hill represents Itacolomi, an orographic accident overlooking the region where the municipality was established and the namesake of the domain that was established in Aldeia dos Índios under the protection of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos do Itacolomi. The lower part recalls the settlement of the place and the first Indian school established in Rio Grande do Sul. The book, quill and ink pot emphasize cultural evolution from Indian primitivism, represented by the bow without arrow. The five-towered mural crown indicates a town, seat of a municipality.
