The municipality of Capivari do Sul (4,020 inhabitants in 2012; 41,760 ha)
is located on the North Seashore of Rio Grande do Sul, 80 km of Porto Alegre.
The municipality is made of the town of Capivari do Sul and of the districts
of Rancho Velho (located 11 km from Capivari) and Santa Rosa (located 7 km
from Capivari). The town is named for the Tupi word "capivari", meaning
Capybara River. The attribute "do Sul" was added for the sake of
differentiation from the municipalities of Capivari (São Paulo) and Capivari
de Baixo (Santa Catalina).
The district of Capivari was established
by Municipal Law No. 1,752 of 9 September 1980, from parts of the districts
of Passinhos and Palmares, in the municipality of Osório. The municipality
of Capivaru was established by State Law No. 10,634 of 28 December 1995.

The
symbols of Capivari do Sul are prescribed in Article 5 of
the Municipal Constitution, adopted on 30 June 1998, as "the flag, the
coat of arms, the anthem, and other symbols prescribed by Law".

The flag, the coat of arms and the
anthem of Capivari do Sul are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 160 of 21
September 1999.
The flag has the following characteristics (Article
4):
1. The height of the flag shall be of 14 units.
2. The length of
the flag shall be of 20 units.
3. The coat of arms shall be placed in the
middle of the flag, inscribed in an ellipse argent, keeping proportions
as on the model.
4. The flag shall be made of four equal stripes placed
as follows:
- Upper quarter: a fess azure (blue);
- Second quarter: [a
fess] or (gold);
- Third quarter: [a fess] gules (red);
- Last
quarter: [a fess] vert (green).
The recommended sizes of the flag are
(Article 5):
- Type 1: With one panel of 45 cm in width;
- Type 2:
With two panels of 45 cm in width;
- Type 3: With three panels of 45 cm
in width; and up to:
- Type 7: With seven panels of 45 cm in width.
Other sized may be produced for specific uses, sticking to the official
proportions.
The meaning of the colours is as follows (Article 7).
Blue represents the heavens and water. Yellow represents the resources of
the municipality. Green represents the flora, the fields, the pastures,
and the agricultural resources. Red represents the vibration and
bellicose temper of its inhabitants and its origin. The white ellipse
inscribing the coat of arms represents harmony and peace.
The
characteristics of the coat of arms are the following (Article 10).
1. A
shield in proper shape, looking like a Samnite's shield gules, its upper
border in a curved pattern and its other borders in a straight pattern,
but not parallel and converging at the lowest point.
2. In the middle of
the shield is placed a geographic map of the municipality of Capivari do
Sul, argent with a border gules. The shield is divided into four unequal
parts representing roads RS 040 and RST 101 in their proper shape/ In the
center of the map of the municipality is represented Lake Capivari.
3.
The crown is made of a representation of the Jesus, Mary and Joseph
fortification, characteristic of the colonization of Rio Grande do Sul
State.
4. Beneath the shield a scroll argent inscribed with the name of
the municipality in letters sable.
5. The shield supported by two
branches of rice, of similar shape but mirrored, which represent the main
source of income for the municipality.
6. In chief a sun or above a
proper representation of a relief and of river Capivari in perspective,
all azure.
7. In chief sinister a log vert with the base or, representing
wood extraction as an additional source of income for the municipality.
8. In base dexter two gears or, representing industry as a source of
income for Capivari do Sul.
9. In base sinister a bovine's head,
representing cattle-breeding.
