Municipality

The municipality of Ibiaçá (4,710 inhabitants in 2010; 34,882 ha) is located 300 km of Porto Alegre.

Ibiaçá originally belonged to Constança Augusta Bueno de Oliveira, who sold a big domain to Filomeno Pereira Gomes. Italian immigrants could acquire small plots, which formed a small town named Vila Nova Fiúme. When the first immigrants settled in 1916, there were already there three Caboclo families. Valentim Dalzotto established in 1923 a sawmill to exploit Brazilian pines and build houses. The first chapel was erected in June 1924, served by the parish priest of Sananduva. The same year were established a mill, a forge, an hotel and a commercial shop.
Nova Fiúme was elevated, as Ibiaçá, to the 12th district of Lagoa Vermelha by Municipal Law No. 59 promulgated on 5 May 1948. Ibiaçá means in a local language "Fountain of Crystalline Water". Ibiaçá was transferred in December 1954 to the newly established municipality of Sananduva, as its 2nd district. The municipality of Ibiaçá was established by State Law No. 5,102 promulgated on 22 November 1965, and inaugurated on 15 May 1966.
