Municipality

The municipality of Morro Reuter (5,676 inhabitants in 2010; 8,783 ha) is located 60 km north of Porto Alegre.

Morro Reuter (German, Reutersberg) was first settled by German colonists, mostly coming from Hunsrück, in 1829; the first house was built by Mathias Mombach, a former soldier of Napoleon's Imperial guard. A first Lutheran church, also used as a school, was erected in 1872; the same year, João Wagner, born in 1826 in the region of Trier, established the first private school in the settlement.

Morro Reuter was established as the 6th district of São Leopoldo by Municipal Law No. 264 promulgated on 24 March 1956. The district was transferred to the newly formed municipality of Dois Irmãos by State Law No. 3,823 promulgated on 10 October 1959.
The municipality of Morro Reuter was established by State Law No. 9,583 promulgated on 20 March 1992.
