Municipality

The municipality of Pinhal da Serra (2,058 inhabitants; 43,600 ha) is located on the border with Santa Catarina state, 330 km of Porto Alegre.

Pinhal da Serra was originally known as São José dos Tocos, for the stumps ("tocos") of the trees cut to establish the settlement. On 29 November 1938, the settlement was granted the rank of "vila", with a new name, Pinhal da Serra, for the Brazilian pines ("pinheiros") that grew profusely there.
The municipality of Pinhal da Serra was established on 17 April 1996 and inaugurated on 1 January 2001.

The flag and arms of Pinhal da Serra are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 57 promulgated on 17 August 2001.

Coat of arms.

Descriptive memoir.
The coat of arms of the municipality of Pinhal da Serra is of orle shape, in Portuguese style. Dexter in the center, a field azure, a sun or superimposed to hills and fields vert charged with bovines, Brazilian pines and a gaucho riding a horse and holding a lasso all vert, azure, gules and sable.
Sinister a river azure, an hydro-electric barrage argent superimposed with a cogwheel and two hands or, argent and sable.
The shield supported by a maize cob or, vert and sable interlaced with a bean plant vert and sable.
A scroll gules with the toponym sable "17-04-1996 Pinhal de Serra 01-01-2001".
The shield surmounted by a mural crown argent with three towers and gates gules representing the powers: Executive, Legislative and Judiciary. The shield with a bordure light azure dexter four stars argent representing the fourth generation of the genealogy of the inhabitants originating from Santo Antônio de Patrulha - RS.

Detailed description.
The shield in its orle format and Portuguese style represents a local pioneer ethnic. The sun represents birth, novelty and dawn. The mountains and hills planted with Brazilian pines form the landscape that gave its name to the municipality. The bovines and the mounted gaucho with its 12-armed lasso recall the historical origin and local tradition from which originate the first contests of the famous Tiro do Laço (Lasso Shooting), which propagates to all corners of the state and country. The hydro-electric plant illustrates in its simple features the great future for the municipality through this great work achieved in nearly 4 years; the cogwheel represents industrial progress which will, surely, increase the local wealth; the hands represent victory and union between the leaders and people for emancipation and encourage to carry on united in the future in search of new conquests for the town.
The supporters, maize and bean, are two crops that contribute to the region's agricultural resources.

Azure (blue) represents wisdom.
Argent (silver) represents mystery and faith.
Vert (green) represents life, natural environment, and hope.
Gules (red) represents justice and power.
Sable (black) represents prudence and protection.

Municipal flag.
The flag of the municipality of Pinhal da Serra follows the traditional format of 14 units in the vertical dimension on 20 units in the horizontal dimension. Horizontally divided in thee equal parts, blue, white and red, each of 4.7 units in width. In the center is placed the coat of arms of the municipality in full colors, covering one third of the flag's width.
