The municipality of Putinga (4,417 inhabitants in 2010; 23,934 ha) is located
200 km of Porto Alegre.
Putinga was settled by Italian colonists around
1910. The town is named for a forest bamboo called "putingal" in Tupi-Guarani.
The municipality of Putinga was established by State Law No. 4,689 promulgated
on 26 December 1963.

The flag of Putinga is white with the municipal coat of arms in the center
and three vertical narrow stripes at fly, green, yellow and white.
White
conveys a message of faith and peace.
Green represents aspiration to a better
future.
Red represents tenacity and commitment to work.
The coat of
arms of Putinga is surmounted by a three-pointed tower [a three-towered mural
crown] representing political independence. In the shield's upper part, a maize
plant on a field or, a tobacco plant on a green field, and a mate seedling on a
red field. in the lower part, the animals represent cattle-breeding.
