Municipality

The municipality of Santa Margarida do Sul (2,352 inhabitants; 95,615 ha) is located 300 km west of Porto Alegre. The municipality is composed of the districts of Santa Margarida (seat), Bolso, Canas, Serrinha and Cambaizinho.

The municipality was established by State Law No. 10,751 promulgated on 16 April April 1996, separating from São Gabriel.
Santa Margarida do Sul is named for its patron saint, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690, canonized in 1920 by Pope Benedict XV), a French mystic nun who promoted modern devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
The town has a chapel dedicated to Pantaleão dos Santos, a 12-years boy who was murdered and beheaded, his head being thrown down into a hole.

Santa Margarida do Sul is the birth place of Colonel José Plácido de Castro (1873-1908), who led the Brazilian troops during the Acre Revolution; on 6 August 1902, he seized the town of Xapuri, which resulted in the proclamation of independence of Acre from Bolivia. Appointed Governor of Acre in January 1903, he signed in March in La Paz a modus vivendi that ended war acts between Brazil and Bolivia; on 17 November 1903, the Treaty of Petrópolis set up new borders between Bolivia and Brazil. Plácido de Castro was appointed Prefect of Upper Acre in 1906. Murdered by his local enemies on 11 August 1908, Plácido de Castro was awarded the title of "Liberator of Acre", while his name was inscribed on 17 November 2004 on the Book of Acts of the Heroes of Motherland and Liberty Heroes in the Motherland Pantheon.
