Municipality

The municipality of Sinimbu (10,847 inhabitants in 2017; 51,010 ha) is located 170 km of Porto Alegre.

Sinimbu was allegedly named for the Tupi-Guarani name of a bird species, but there is no record of the presence of such a bird in Sinimbu. Another explanation says that the place's name was coined by a native, for a word meaning "Bush Lizard". Afonso Pedro Mabilde, once director of the colony, stated that there was no native there but those crossing the territory when heading to the uplands. The most probable etymology refers to João Lino Vieira Cansanção de Sinimbu, President of the Province of São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul, who pushed the colonization of "linhas" Sinimbu, São João da Serra, Dona Josefa and Andréas.

Sinimbu was first settled in the middle of the 19th century by João Backes. Plots were designed in 1878 by Carlos Trein Filho. The district of Sinimbu was established in 1905 within Santa Cruz do Sul.
The municipality of Sinimbu was established on 20 March 1992.
