Municipality

The municipality of Tapejara (21,809 inhabitants in 2015; 24,061 ha) is located 330 km north of Porto Alegre.

The municipality of Tapejara was established as Sede Teixeira by Manoel Amâncio Teixeira and Julião Luiz Almeida, who acquired three plots from Antônio dos Santos Bonetes. Plots were delimited and sold in three waves (1915, 1917 and 1920).
Sede Teixiera was elevated to the 11th section of the district of Coxilha, part of the municipality of Passo Fundo; transferred in 1922 to the district of Sete do Setembro, Sede Teixeira was elevated in 1929 to the 14th district of Passo Fundo.
The district was renamed in 1940 to Tapejara, the Tupi-Guarani name of river Carreteiro, "tape" meaning "a road" and "jara", "a lord". The Portuguese name of the river refers to the carters ("carroceiros") transporting goods between Sede Teixiera and Passo Fundo. The journey took at least three to four days, carts being the only means of transport at the time.

Emancipation of Tapejara was pushed by Father Raimundo, the parish's vicar, subsequently awarded the title of Protector of the Municipality. The plebiscite, organized with the support of State Representative Victor Graeff, was held on 10 July 1955. The municipality of Tapejara was established by State Law No. 2,667 promulgated on 9 August 1955.
