The municipality of Vale do Sol (11,077 inhabitants in 2010; 32,823 ha) is
located 200 km north-west of Rio Grande do Sul.
Vale do Sol (Sun Valley)
was settled in 1862.
The municipality of Vale do Sol was established by State
Law No. 9,599 promulgated on 20 March 1992, separating from Herveiras, Santa
Cruz do Sul and Candelária. The name of the new municipality was selected in a
public contest; Vale do Sol, a name coined in the 1960s by the medical doctor
Luiz Arthur Jacobus based on his observations on local climate, was preferred to
Trombudo, Lindenau, Faxinal de Dentro, and Boa Esperança.

The flag and arms of Vale do Sol are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 100
promulgated on 19 October 1995.
The coat of arms is green, representing
forests and fields, orange and yellow, representing the soil's resources and
fertility, and white representing fraternity.
A red scroll beneath the shield
inscribed with the municipality's date of foundation, indicates people's
struggle and conquests. The supporters, tobacco and maize, represent the
region's main crops. The book represents education and technology, the man
represents people, and the plow represents agriculture, which is predominant on
the whole municipal territory. The shield's concave upper edge, featuring a sun
in the background, represents the municipality's geographical location.
