Municipality

The municipality of Criciúma (211,369 inhabitants in 2017, therefore the 5th most populated municipality in the state; 23,563 ha) is located 200 km south of Florianópolis.

Criciúma was established, as Cresciúma, on 6 January 1880 by 22 Italian families (139 people) coming from Venice, Belluno and Treviso. The colony was elevated to the 6th district of Araranguá by State Law No. 48 promulgated on 2 September 1892.

Coal was discovered in Cresciúma in 1905, being used only by local forges. During the First World War, importation of coal was extremely limited, so that the Brazilin Government industrialized the local mines. Carbonífera Próspera managed mines on Cresciúma, the first of them inaugurated in 1915 in Pio Correa borough; coal, extracted with basic tools, was transported to Laguna using carts, to be subsequently shipped to the country's big towns.
Coal production was boosted by the inauguration on 31 January 1919 of the railway station operated by Ferrovia Teresa Cristina.
The municipality of Cresciúma was established on 4 November 1925; at the time, the town had 8,500 inhabitants.

The first gilded age of black gold ended during the interbellum, when foreign coal, cheaper and of better quality, could again be imported to Brazil. A second gilded age was initiated by President Getúlio Vargas, who favored national economy and industry. Renamed to Criciúma on 21 October 1943, the town was proclaimed in 1946 Brazil's Coal Capital. Ìn 1947, Cerâmica Santa Catarina (CESACA) established a big factory that produced azulejos for the whole region. Other companies soon made of the town a world's reference for ceramic industry.

In late March 1974, the Big Flood caused the death of 30 people in southern Brazil. Considered as the most sever flood in Santa Catarina, it suppressed in four days boroughs and plantations, leaving 150,OOO people homeless. Criciúma's downtown was totally flooded; the town remained isolated from the rest of the world, except by radio communication, for four years.
On 29 March 1978, 13 people were killed by the explosion of gas and gasoline bottles; the owner of the shop where the bottles were stored was sentenced to 254 years in jail, being eventually released in 1995. The event is still remembered as the "crime of the century" in Criciúma.

Description of the Flag

At http://www.pmc.com.br/criciuma/bandeira.htm we can read: "The municipal flag of Criciuma was created by the heraldist Arcinóe Peixoto de Faria, whose style obeys the tradition of Portuguese heraldry…. The coat of arms at the center symbolizes the municipal power. The rectangle on which it is placed represents the city itself--home of the municipality. The stripes symbolize the municipal power that expands toward all parts of the territory and the quarters thus formed represent the rural areas that exist in the territory of the municipality."
Jorge Candeias, 7 February 1998

The flag and arms of Criciúma are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 805 promulgated on 26 November 1970. The symbols are not described in the Law.

Criciúma E.C. aka Tigre was established on 13 May 1947 as Comerciário Esporte Clube; the first Statutes of the club were approved during its first General Assembly held on 8 September 1947. The club's current name was adopted on 17 March 1978, pushed by President Antenor Angeloni as a means of better identification of the club with the population of the town (51 members voted for the change, 24 against it).
Tigre won ten Santa Catarina championships betwen 1968 and 2013, three in a row (1989, 1990, 1991 included), and the Santa Catarina Cup in 1993.
At the national level, Tigre won Série B in 2002 and Série C in 2006. Winner of the Brazil Cup in 1991 (1-1; 0-0 to Grêmio), the club qualified for Copa Libertadores, ranking 5th (defeated in quarterfinals by São Paulo, 1-0; 1-1). In 1991, the team was coached by Luiz Felipe Scolari, subsequently coach of the Brazilian national team winner of the 2020 FIFA World Cup.

The flag of Criciúma E.C. is horizontally divided black-yellow-white with the club's emblem in the center.

On 13 May 1984, the club, still presided by Antenor Angeloni, changed its original blue and white colors for yellow, black and white. Yellow is a symbol of wealth, while black represents coal. White was retained as one of the original colors, which provides harmony to the whole design.

Various stars were added above the emblem in the aftermath of the club's victories. The official flag, however, do not seem to have any star added
