Municipality

The municipality of Araquari (24,810 inhabitants in 2010; 38,417 ha) is located 170 km north of Florianópolis.

Araquari was explored some 40 years after the European discovery of Brazil. Álvaro Nunes Cabeza de Vaca sent an expedition composed of 250 men, 40 horses, slaves, and a group of natives christened by the Jesuits. After one month of voyage, they reached a place they called Paranaguá Mirim (in Tupi-Guarani, "a small cove"), subsequently renamed to Paraty.
The first Portuguese pioneers settled the area in 1658 but the town was actually established only in 1848 by Manoel Vieira and Joaquim de Rocha Coutinho. The two founders, disagreeing on the place where to establish the new colony, required arbitration by the judge of the county of São Francisco. Rocha Coutinho's choice was validated, so that the colony was established on the bank of river Parati. The parish of Senhor Bom Jesus do Paraty was founded in 1854, as part of the municipality of Nossa Senhora das Graças do Rio São Francisco (subsequently, São Francisco do Sul).
The district of Parati was established by Provincial Law No. 375 promulgated on 8 June 1854. The municipality of Parati was established on 5 April 1876. For a short period (1923-1925), Parati was downgraded to a district.
The municipality was renamed to Araquari (in Tupi-Guarani, Bird Refuge River, based on "ara", "a great parrot", "quara / cuara", "a refuge", and "y", "water") by Decree-Law No. 941 promulgated on 31 December 1943.

This design modified the first coat of arms of Araquari, which was prescribed by Municipal Law No. 473 promulgated on 1 August 1975.

Portuguese shield: Also known as Iberian due to its base constituted of a semi-circle widely used in Portugal at the time of the discovery of Brazil, for this reason preferred by Brazilian heraldry scholars to represent municipalities.
In Brazilian heraldry, it represents the Portuguese origin of the nation.
Trident: Represents the mythological scepter of Neptune, king of the sea, and, specifically, fishing and related industry. The blue field means the sea.
Hoe: Means field work, while the green field represents labor.
River: Refers to river Parati, which waters the town and is rich in a fish called "parati" (the indigenous name of the small mullet), where the settlement of the municipality began.
Sun: Means the municipal beach called Barra do Sul.
Mural crown argent: The private and consecrated emblem of municipalities and of their administrative autonomy.
With four towers: One complete towers and two half-towers, one of each side.
Writing "Araquari": Argent on a red scroll.
