The municipality of Matos Costa (2,639 inhabitants in 2010; 43,307 ha) is
located on the border with Paraná, 430 km north-west of Florianópolis.
Matos Costa was established as São João dos Pobres, by pioneer José Cordeiro.
The Campo Alto estate was subsequently founded by Colonel Manoel Lourenço de
Araújo and his family. On 4 April 1908, the railway connecting São João dos
Pobres to Porto União was inaugurated, which boosted colonization. The
development of the area was stopped a few years later by the Contestado War
(1912-1916).
The district of São João dos Pobres was established by
Resolution No. 37 promulgated on 15 September 1917. The district was soon
renamed to Matos Costa for the re-built railway station. The namesake, Captain
João Teixeira de Matos Costa, was killed in an ambush in 1914.
The
municipality of Matos Costa was established by State Law No. 819 promulgated on
23 April 1962.
