The municipality of Pindamonhangaba (locally known as Pinda; 147,034 inhabitants in 2010; 73,017 ha) is located in the Paraíba Valley, 150 km of São Paulo.

Pindamonhangaba was "officially" founded on 12 August 1672, when Antônio Bicudo Leme and Braz Esteves Leme built a chapel dedicated to St. Joseph and founded nearby the village of São José de Pindamonhangaba, on a piece of land acquired from the Countess of Vimieiro. The Municipal Law No. 197 of 7 December 1953 proclaimed the 12 August 1672 the date of foundation of the town and of the brothers Leme its founders. An alternative theory says that Pindamonhangaba was founded on 22 July 1643 by Captain João do Prado Martins, who was officially granted the domain on 17 May 1649. How the domain was transferred from Martins to the Countess is unknown. The municipality of Pindamonhangaba was established on 10 July 1705, seceding from Taubaté.

The symbols of Pindamonhangaba are prescribed in Article 3 of the Municipal Constitution, adopted on 5 April 1990 and last amended on 21 May 2012, as "the coat of arms, the flag and the anthem". Article 4 prescribes the official colours of the municipality as "green, white, red, blue and yellow".

The flags is divided horizontally green over red with a narrow horizontal white stripe across the center; overall, a blue disk with five white stars depicting the constellation of the Southern Cross, and on the green field above the disk a yellow coronet.

The flag is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 55 of 6 July 1950. It was designed by a commission made of Mário de Assis César (President), Davi de Moura and José Wadie Milad. Green and yellow, the Imperial colours, symbolize the contribution of Pindamonhangaba to the "Ipiranga Cry" [the declaration of independence of Brazil by Prince Regent Peter, 7 September 1822]. Red and white, symbolizing blood and purity, respectively, and recalling the São Paulo flag, are a tribute to the 1932 epos, during which Pindamonhangaba-born General Júlio Marcondes Salgado*, one of the commanders of the Constitutionalist Army, was killed. The Southern Cross recalls the Christian origin of the people, recalling also the star that represents São Paulo State on the national flag. The white stripe Paraíba represents rivers Paraíba and Ipiranga. The blue starry disk represents the limpid sky of the starry night of proclamation of political emancipation (10 July 1705). The diadem alludes to the title of "Princess of the North" granted to the town [by the poet and chronicler Emílio Zaluar].
