The flag of the estância (resort) of Serra Negra is a white field upon
which is the official coat of arms of the municipality. Above the coat of
arms is the name Serra Negra in black letters. The coat of arms was adopted
by law 12 of 15 October 1937 and law 07 of 31 March 1948: on a silver
field, three black heraldic mountains charged with as many escutcheons and
forming a mountain range (serra negra means "black mountains"), from which issue two
springs symbolizing the mineral waters of the resort; in base, a blue river
with three silver swimming fishes, recalling the original name of the
settlement, Chapel of Our Lady of the River of Fish. The dexter escutcheon
shows the arms of the
founder of Serra Negra, Lourenço Franco de Oliveira: divided per pale,
dexter green a castle silver upon a natural colored rock, beaten by waves of
the sea, silver and blue; and sinister red an olive tree green fimbriated
gold. The center escutcheon shows the arms of the State of São Paulo. The
sinister escutcheon is blue with a white chapel, representing the Chapel of
Our Lady of the Rosary, the mother church of Serra Negra. On the mural
crown, a fourth escutcheon, red with a white rosary, is the emblem of the
patroness of the municipality, Our Lady of the Rosary. The supporters are
branches of coffee and grapevine shoots. The motto is Virtvte Pavlistarvm
Florvi (I flourish thanks to the valor of the Paulistanos).
