Bofete was founded in 1843 by Vicente Ferreira, who offered a piece of
land to erect a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Piety.
Accordingly, the village that developed nearby was named Nossa Senhora
da Piedade. The parish of Rio Bonito was established by Provincial Law
No. 6 of 28 February 1866, forming a district of Botocatu; the new
name of the place (Good River) referred to the limpid and rich in fish
river that waters the place, known today as Rio do Peixe (Fish River).
The municipality of Rio Bonito was established by Provincial Law No.
75 of 21 April 1880 and renamed Bofete by Law No. 1828 of 21 January
1921. The name of the municipality is a derivation of the French word
"buffet", "a sideboard". Bofete is located down a hill whose caves,
forming a natural sideboard, were used at the time by the muleteers to
store grain and goods.

The symbols of Bofete are prescribed in Article 2 of the Municipal
Constitution, adopted on 5 April 1990, as "the flag, the coat of arms
and the anthem, representative of its history".

The flag is green with a blue cross. The horizontal arm of the cross is charged with a skyline and the writing "Bofete 21-04-1880" all in white. The skyline must represent the range of rocky spurs known as the Sleeping Giant ("gigante adormecido" - photo, http://van-blogdavanessa.blogspot.fr/2011/05/algumas-fotos-de-bofete.html); Bofete is nicknamed the "Sleeping Giant's Cradle".

Another flag of Bofete is white with the municipal coat of arms in the middle. This flag was used in official events, therefore it must be a previous version of the municipal flag
