Castilho was founded in 1934 by the Ferreira Brito family on a plot
offered by Armel de Miranda. The village that developed nearby was
named Vila Cauê; the engineer Alfredo Castilho, commissioned by
"Estrada de Ferro Noroeste do Brasil" to set up the Francisco de Sá
bridge over river Paraná, stayed in the village. A new village
developed around the Alfredo Castilho railway station, inaugurated in
1937; located at the junction of the railway and river, the village
quickly increased. The village was named Castilho in 1944. The symbols of Castiho are prescribed in Article 7 of the Municipal
Constitution, as "the flag, the anthem and the coat of arms defined by
Law". The flag of Castilho is blue with a white triangle along the hoist,
charged with the municipal coat of arms, and other yellow, black and
white triangles forming arrows pointing to the flag's fly.
The thunderbolt and the pylons on the coat of arms must represent the
Jupiá hydroelectric plant, inaugurated in 1969 and known today as the
Engenheiro Sousa Dias plant - the 3rd biggest hydroelectric plant in
Brazil, part of the Urubupungá complex.
