The municipality of Cruzália (2,270 inhabitants in 2010; 14,917 ha) is located 430 km west of São Paulo.

Cruzália originated in the establishment of the settlement of São Sebastião da Cruz Alta by Francisco Máximo da Silva and Joaquim Lourenço Gonçalves in the 1920s. St. Sebastian was the patron saint of the place, while "Cruz Alta" (High Cross) referred to a big tree with cross-shaped branches. The name of the place was subsequently shortened to Cruz Alta. The settlement was part of the municipality of Maracaí and most of the land was owned by the Serôdio family, established in Pedrinhas (today, the municipality of Pedrinhas Paulista).

The district of Cruz Alta was established on 5 July 1935 and renamed Cruzália the next year, since a municipality of the same name already existed in Rio Grande do Sul. The municipality of Cruzália was established on 31 December 1964 by Law No. 8,092 and inaugurated on 4 April 1965.

The flag, arms and "other symbols prescribed by Municipal Law" are listed, as the municipal symbols of Cruzália, without further description, in Article 3 of the Municipal Constitution, last revised on 22 November 2006.

The flag of Cruzália is vertically divided median green-white-yellow (1:2:1) with the municipal coat of arms in the middle. Median green represents soybean cultivation. White "is the coat of arms" [?]. Yellow represents the potential for wheat production.

The coat of arms is "Azure an escutcheon azure orled gules a pyramid or charged with a Latin cross argent over waves argent. The shield surmounted by a six-towered mural crown argent ports gules. The shield supported dexter by a soybean plant and sinister by a wheat plant, the two leaved and fructed proper. Below the shield a scroll gules inscribed with the toponym 'CRUZALIA' surrounded by the dates '4/4' and '1965', all or."

The shield is of the first style introduced in Portugal under French influence, inherited by the Brazilian heraldry to evoke the early colonists of the country. The six-towered mural crown is the symbol of a municipal seat. The ports gules recall the courage and dedication of the pioneers and of the leaders of the community. Azure is a symbol of justice, perseverance, loyalty, recreation and beauty. The red orle represents the municipal progressivist expansion. The golden pyramid symbolizes liberty, equality and fraternity. Or represents glory, splendor and greatness. The waves argent represents the Capivara hydroelectric plant. Argent represents peace, friendship, work, prosperity, purity and religious feelings. The cross ("cruz") recalls the name of the place. Soybean and wheat are the main crops growing on the fertile soil and the main sources of income. The red scroll is a symbol of dedication, patriotic feeling and valiance. The date recalls the inauguration of the municipality.
