Iepê originates in the establishment in 1917 by the Companhia Brasileira de Colonização of the settlement of São Roque da Boa Esperança, located in the municipality of Conceição do Monte Alegre. While the settlement was ruled by the Roman Catholic Church, most of the colonists were Protestant. Their leader, Francisco Severiano de Almeida, better known as Chico Maria, could not obtain the establishment of a school, although he would have accepted a Catholic teacher. The plot thickened when a Protestant was buried into the cemetery; the authorities fence the cemetery to put the Protestant's tomb out of it. Upset by such an intolerance, Chico Maria decided to establish a new settlement where religious freedom would be respected. Together with João Santana, he obtained apiece of land from his nephew Antônio de Almeida Prado, where he established a new settlement named Liberdade (Liberty). The district of Iepê was established on 29 December 1927. since there was already another settlement called Iepê in São Paulo State, Caio Simões proposed to rename the district using the Tupi-Guarani word for "liberty". The district of Iepê was transferred on 5 July 1935 to the municipality of Rancharia. On 5 August 1940,it was divided into two zones, Iepê proper and Alegria (subsequently renamed Agicê and separated from Iepê on 24 December 1948). The municipality of Iepê was established on 30 November 1944 and inaugurated on 1 January 1945. The district of Nantes was incorporated to Iepê on 30 December 1953 by State Law No. 2,456.
The flag of Iepê is blue with an off-centered red cross fimbriated yellow. Over the intersection of the cross' arms is placed a white disk charged with the municipal arms. The icon-like image of the flag on the municipal website uses a dark shade of blue, while the image contributed to Wikimedia Commons by the Iepê municipal administration uses a light shade of blue. A photo seems to indicate that the colours of the flag actually in use is neither too dark nor too light, matching the blue shade used on the flag of São Paulo State.
