About the Flag

The municipality of Júlio Mesquita (4,430 inhabitants in 2010; 12,821 ha) is located in central São Paulo State.

Júlio Mesquita emerged as small nuclei established in coffee-growing estates, such as Chantebled (1920), São João do Inhema (1926) and Santa Sílvia (1926). In 1935, when cotton plantations attracted several colonists in the area, Porfirio Barros Cavalcante and Horácio Nakaidara decided to found a new town, originally made of two parts, Ouro Branco (White Gold), dedicated to cotton cultivation, and Mesquita, dedicated to coffee cultivation. The district of Mesquita was established by Decree No. 9,775 of 30 November 1938, as part of the municipality of Cafelândia, and renamed Inhema by State Law-Decree No. 14,334 of 30 November 1944. The municipality of Júlio Mesquita was established by State Law No. 233 of 24 December 1948 and inaugurated on 1 January 1949. The municipality is named for the journalist Júlio César Ferreira de Mesquita (1862-1927), director in 1902 of the newspaper "O Estado de São Paulo", the first big Brazilian newspaper independent of the political parties, still ran by his descendants, and founder of the "Revista do Brasil" (1916).
