Lindóia was established, as a district of Serra Negra, on 29 June 1899 by State Law no. 638. The name of the place means in Tupi-Guarani "a river that never floods". The municipality of Lindóia was first established on 30 June 1938 by State Decree-Law No. 9,775. Lindóia was downgrade to a district of Águas de Lindóia on 30 December 1953 by State Law no. 2,456. The municipality of Lindóia was reestablished on 28 February 1964 by State Law No. 8,092 and inaugurated on 31 March 1965.
Article 2 of the Municipal Constitution prescribes, without further
description, the municipal symbols as "a flag, a coat of arms and an
anthem, representative of its culture and history".

The coat of arms of Lindóia was designed in 1969, for the celebration
of the 5th anniversary of the municipal emancipation.
The shield is surmounted by a mural crown gules, whose three towers
represent the three successive phases of the administrative evolution
of the town:
- dexter, 1728-1936, as part of Serra Negra;
- sinister, 1938-1964, as part of águas de Lindóia;
- central, 1964-, as a municipality.
The shield depicts the most significant natural features of the
municipality:
- in green ,the Serra de Mantiqueira mountains;
- in blue, the great lake;
- an eucalyptus, representing the exuberant vegetation;
- river Peixe;
- a spring, representing the most important natural resource.
The shield is surrounded by two branches of coffee recalling the
Paulista origin of the town.
Below the shield a three-part scroll azure inscribed with 'LINDOYA',
'AQUA PURA' 'VITA LONGA' (Latin for Pure Water, Long Life).
