The municipality of Monte Azul Paulista (18,931 inhabitants in 2011; 26,350 ha) is located 420 km of São Paulo.

Monte Azul Paulista was founded on 29 June 1896 by Felipe Cassiano, who sculpted a cross in a big tree located neat a huge palm. The event is reported in the diary of Joaquim da Costa Penha; accordingly, the local historian João Francisco Massoneto believes that the official year of foundation, given as 1897, should be corrected. Pieces of land from the Avanhandava Estate were, indeed, offered in 1897 to establish the new settlement, then called Patrimônio Senhor Bom Jesus de Monte Azul. The doubt on the foundation year caused some stir when the 50th anniversary of the foundation was celebrated, in 1947 and not in 1946 as some inhabitants had wished it.
