The municipality of Olímpia (50,024 inhabitants in 2010; 80,270 ha) is located in north-western São Paulo State, 430 km of São Paulo. The municipality is made of the districts of Olímpia (capital), Baguaçu and Ribeiro dos Santos. Olímpia is known as "The Capital of Folklore"; the world-famous Folklore National Festival welcomes every year more than 150,000 visitors.

Olímpia originates in the establishment on 9 July 1903 of the Patrimônio de São João Batista dos Olhos-d´Água. The district of Vila Olímpia was established on 18 December 1906 by State Law No. 1,035. The district was named for Maria Olímpia, the single daughter of the local politician Dr. Antônio Olímpio Rodrigues Vieira and the godchild of engineer Robert John Reid. The municipality of Olímpia, seceding from Barretos, was established on 7 December 1917 by State Law No. 1,571 and inaugurated on 7 April 1918.

Article 2 of the Municipal Constitution states that "the municipal symbols are a coat of arms, an anthem, a flag and a ribbon of the municipal colours. The municipality shall adopt the colours of the flag in all its usual and representative forms."

Red (gules) is a symbol of blood shed on the battlefield, audacity, valour, valiance, intrepidity, nobleness and honour, recalling the contribution of Olímpia to civic movements on the side of Order and Law, for Democracy and for Freedom, such as the heroic behaviour in 1932 and during the Second World War, when inhabitants of the town offered their life and blood. Yellow (or) is a symbol of wealth, splendour, glory, nobleness, power, force, faith, prosperity, sovereignty and rule.
