The municipality of São Miguel Arcanjo (31,452 inhabitants in 2010; 93,001 ha) is located 180 km of São Paulo. São Miguel Arcanjo was founded in 1889 by gold scavengers who built a chapel dedicated to Archangel St. Michael.

The symbols of São Miguel Arcanjo are prescribed in Article 2 of the Municipal Constitution as "the flag, the anthem and the coat of arms, representative of its culture and history".

The flag is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 388 of 21 November 1966. The flag is blue, quartered into eight parts by a white cross and a white saltire charged with two thin yellow lines. In the middle of the flag is placed a white rectangle charged with the municipal coat of arms.

The flag is compliant with the Portuguese heraldic tradition, inherited in Brazil. The coat of arms represents the municipal government while the white rectangle that surrounds it represents the town as the seat of the municipality. The stripes represent the municipal power spreading all over the municipal territory. The quarters represent the rural estates located on the municipal territory.

The coat of arms is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 387 of 21 November 1966. "A Samnitic shield, surmounted by a six-towered mural crown argent. Azure two angels affronty and holding a trumpet all or [argent on the drawing], in chief a dove argent. The shield supported dexter by a plant of rice and sinister by a plant of maize the two proper. Beneath the shield a scroll azure inscribed with the municipality's name in letters or."

The Samnitic shield, the first style of shield introduced from France to Portugal, evokes the Latin colonizers and main builders of the Brazilian nationality. The mural crown is a symbol of municipal emancipation, representing here a third-rank town, seat of a municipality.

Azure is a symbol of justice, nobleness, perseverance, zeal and loyalty. The angels and the dove represent the Holy Ghost and the town's patron saint and namesake, recalling the Biblical sentence: "The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee" (Luke 1:26-38). Or is a symbol of force, faith, wealth, love, eternity and prosperity. The dove is a symbol of saint and pure love, of conjugal peace, of simple and benign minds and of sweetness.. Argent is a symbol of peace, friendship, innocence and purity. Rice and maize, the main crops produced by the generous and fertile soil, and the main source of income for the municipality.
