Cariri do Tocantins was founded in the 1950s; the seniority of the settlement of the place is disputed among the Neponoceno and Ponciano families. The municipality of Cariri do Tocantins was established by Law No. 251 of 20 February 1991, seceding from Gurupi.
Photos of the flag in official use indicate that the real flag has a narrower
white border than on the images:
