Novopolotsk (rus.)/Navapolatsk (bel.) is a city in Belarus, Vitebsk region (voblast`). Translation of this name - "New Polotsk". Polotsk is a very old city of ancient tribe of "polochane" (known since 862 a.c.), was part of Lithuania since XIII c,. in 1562-1579 and since 1667 - in Russia, since 1924 - in Belarus republic and since 1954 - in Vitebsk voblast of Belarus. This city of Novopolotsk is centre of district in RegionÂ of Vitebsk of Republic of Belarus Its name has no any relation to Poland. To a South-East from Novopolotsk-city isÂ located the ancient city of Polotsk, which since 8 centuries A.D. wasÂ Â centre ofÂ Principality of Polotsk in Ancient Russia, then - in Great Lithuanian Principality and Polen-Lithuanian State Rzeczpospolita. The nameÂ ofÂ NovopolotskÂ occurs from the name of PolotskÂ andÂ slavicÂ word "novy" = new. NovopolotskÂ = New Polotsk.

According to one website I found, which lists sister cities of RhÃ¶ne towns <www.ville-givors.fr> as translated: "Novopolosk is situated in the north of Belarus, whose capital Minsk (200 km to the south of it) is twinned with Lyon. Novopolosk, which means "New Polosk" is a new town founded at the end of the 50s near Polosk (one of the cradles of Slav culture) around a vast petrochemical complex. It possesses a university.
