Description of the flag

The flag of the District Municipality of Chetwynd in British Columbia, Canada, is shown at Wikipedia.

About the District:

The District of Chetwynd is a small town in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in northeastern British Columbia, Canada, and a member municipality of the Peace River Regional District. The 64.32 km² (24.83 mi²) municipality is home to around 2,770 residents[1] and consists of the town, a community forest, and four satellite properties. In 2004 it was ranked as one of B.C.'s most livable municipalities due to its high employment rates, affordable housing, and large park spaces.Chetwynd — once known as "Little Prairie" — adopted its current name in honour of provincial politician Ralph L.T. Chetwynd just prior to its incorporation in 1962. Chetwynd is the last stop before the Pine Pass, which cuts south through the Rocky Mountains.

Chetwynd's economy, geography, and history are symbolized in its coat of arms. Moose and elk supporters represent the area's abundant wildlife, while a logging truck and train signify the junction of the highways and rail line. The flame and sheaf of grain attest to the region's key natural gas and agricultural industries, respectively. The shield's lower half portrays the land as an ancient floodplain at the foot of the Rocky Mountains and Chetwynd as the gateway to the Peace River area. The rising sun helm is taken from the B.C. provincial flag, and a coniferous tree crest represents the importance of the forestry industry. Chetwynd's flag incorporates the coat of arms into a blue and white Canadian pale.

The quasi-heraldic arms show a Blue Flame for the Natural Gas (CH4) industry, some wheat for agriculture, and a landscape in the lower half of the shield. The crest is a stand of evergreen trees with a setting sun like the one on British Columbia's arms and flag (there is also a redundant sun in the landscape), The supporters appear to be an Elk (Wapiti) and a Moose, but they are also supported by a steam locomotive and a logging truck. The motto is "Success Through Effort", and the flag has "DISTRICT OF" in an arc above the arms and "CHETWYND" below the arms with both the C and D in Chetwynd in larger capitals than the rest.
