Description of the flag

The flag of Langford is based upon the coat of arms.

Shield
The Shield has two horizontal divisions. The red and gold bars are taken directly from the Coat of Arms of Captain Langford. The red represents the rocks through which the rivers flow and the gold represents the waters, especially Goldstream. Vertical bars are cut by horizontal lines from edge to edge on the Shield with the bars below drawn as wavy, thus symbolizing the waterfall; waters falling and running away below the falls.

The blue area above this represents all the waters of the District of Langford with three fountains, the classic symbol in heraldry for bodies of water, representing the three (3) lakes in the District of Langford (Glen Lake, Langford Lake, and Florence Lake).

Crest (Above the Helmet)
Around the Helmet is the mantling; in this case red and gold which are the principal colours of the shield. The crest has two (2) main elements. The crown of cut stone masonry and the mural coronet is the traditional heraldic symbol for municipal government. The upper part of the body is the heraldic tiger, a mythical beast. The tiger is red and has a collar of white dogwood flowers, the provincial flower of British Columbia. Between its’ forepaws, the tiger carries a steam locomotive wheel coloured blue, representing the historic E & N Railway and by extension, the ongoing importance of transport to the community.

The tiger is found in the Crest of Captain Langford, the District’s namesake. Here the tiger also represents the determined spirit of the citizens in defence of the community’s interest.

Supporters
On the left side of the shield it is a gold tiger with a collar of purple lavender, which is grown in the Happy Valley area of Langford. On the right side is a gold female cougar with a pink collar of Cheals Weeping Crab Apple flowers, representing the official tree for Langford. The tiger supporter reinforces the reference to Captain Langford with the female cougar symbolizing local natural heritage. Both animals are graceful, strong and powerful.

Compartment
The compartment is the base on which the supporters stand and represents the waters of the District, the rocky outcrops and parks and the heritage of forests, both coniferous and distinctive arbutus. The salmon honour the salmon run and the first peoples of the region. The lowest part of the compartment consists of alternating wavy bands of blue and white. Place on this is a gold salmon in the Salish style. Above the wavy bands are outcrops of rock covered with grass, fir and arbutus trees.

Motto
The Motto Golden in setting determined in Spirit lends a reference to the beauty of the District of Langford, including specific allusion to Goldstream and a comment on the community's drive to enhance Langford’s special character and situation.
