Now that the township can rally ‘round a flag, the next step is to register the trademark for the pennant. Spallumcheen council unveiled the township’s new flag at its regular monthly meeting. The flag, which is currently flying outside the township office, and another hangs inside council chambers, features a white background with the words "Spallumcheen Township" bordering a green oval that holds a plow on a piece of soil.

Council had six options presented to them before choosing one. The issue of a flag came up before several council members attended the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in Vancouver, and Spallumcheen was one of the only B.C. communities without a flag or an emblem.

Now that a flag has been designed, council is moving forward with plans to register the trademark for the flag, as written by the township’s deputy corporate officer, Cindy Graves, who explained that “the Township of Spallumcheen is a beautiful sunny valley made up of rich agriculture and farming operations that have been since the incorporation in 1892.”

Graves said the gold lettering on the flag “depicts the bold sunshine, as well as the golden wheat, corn, barley, triticale and oat crops grown within the community. The black walking plow (which is a horse-drawn implement) centred on the flag symbolizes the heritage of farming practices since the community’s incorporation. The brown soil reflects that Spallumcheen is a rich agricultural land base, and the green oval signifies the rich green valley within our municipality.”

In a report to council, administrator Lynda Shykora explained that staff has filed an application to register the trademark. Shykora said a preliminary search of existing trademarks was conducted prior to the application being filed.

The Township of Spallumcheen Council and Township Staff finalized the flag design in the latter part of 2009. The Township of Spallumcheen is a beautiful sunny valley made up of rich agriculture and farming operations that have been since the incorporation in 1892. The Township of Spallumcheen gold lettering depicts the bold sunshine, as well as the golden wheat, corn, barley, triticale and oat crops grown within the community. The black walking plow (which is a horse drawn implement), centered on the flag, symbolizes the heritage of farming practices since the community's incorporation. The brown soil reflects that Spallumcheen is a rich agricultural land base and the green oval signifies the rich green valley within our municipality. Information and photo of the flag thanks to Cindy Graves, Deputy Corporate Officer, Township of Spallumcheen.
