Almost 130 years since it Stellarton became a town, an official town flag is now flying.

“On this day in October 1889, the Town of Stellarton was officially incorporated,” Mayor Danny MacGillivray said during the unveiling last Friday at the Town Square, where the flag was formally raised, joining the provincial and national flags that fly near the town’s fire hall.

“So we are here not only to raise our flag, but also to celebrate the 128th birthday of our town.”

The flag design is essentially the same design as a banner “that was in use since I was a child, at least,” the mayor said. The banner was tweaked in 1989 for Stellarton’s centennial year, but wouldn’t be adopted as an official flag until council approved the idea last month.

“This flag puts joy in the soul of every Stellartonian, near and far, alive or passed away – they are all here with us today as we raise this flag to honour them and our town,” MacGillivray said during his speech.

ABOUT THE FLAG
The crest on the Stellarton flag has two components. The town’s deep coal mining heritage is depicted on the right, showing a man picking coal while a train waits in the background to be loaded. In the centre, above the crest, is the Fleur-de-lis. On the left side at the crest on Stellarton’s official town flag are three items: a shaft of wheat representing abundance, life and fertility, a sickle symbolizing that hard work leads to a fruitful harvest, the plow representing rich natural resources while the word Itslef is an old English last name that means "valley where play and sport take place."
