Description of the flag

From the municipal website (PDF Format):

Mayor Rick Austin officiated at the inaugural raising of the new flag for the Municipality of Port Hope on October 13, 2006 R. Carl Cannon, CAO noted, "Earlier this year Council, by resolution, the development of a Municipal flag utilizing the Corporate logo situated in a central location flanked by green bands. The logo was previously approved in 2002 and reflects the unified Municipality and its rolling and treed hills located in the rural area with the urban area as represented by the Town Hall clock tower and the shores of Lake Ontario, all within a stylized window frame. Public input had been sought and received through the flag development process."

The flag will be flown at the Town Hall and other Municipal facility sites as well as potentially being on display for special events and ceremonies.

From the official website of Port Hope, Ontario: http://www.town.porthope.on.ca/

Although the first devices specifically created for Canada by the traditional heraldic officers of the Sovereign date from the seventeenth century, only since 1988, has there been an indigenous Canadian Heraldic Authority to grant new coats of arms.

In March 1990 the Town of Port Hope sought such a grant of Arms to replace the unofficial device that the Town has long used to identify itself, and the grant was duly made by the chief Herald of Canada on January 18, 1991.

Following traditional practice, the grant assigns to the Town Arms, Crest, Motto, Supporters, Badge, and Flag. These retain some of the important symbols, both historically and geographically, with which citizen's of Port Hope has associated themselves or many years, and add new links to the Town's namesake, Colonel Henry Hope.

The flag displays the Arms bordered in blue on a gold and blue banner which reverses the pattern of the Arms themselves.

The (former) flag and arms of Port Hope were inscribed on 18 January 1991 on the Public Register of Arms, Flags and Badges, Vol. II, p. 83. The announcement of the Letters Patent was made on May 4, 1991, in Vol. 125, p. 1,485 of the Canada Gazette.
