The municipality of Mont-Tremblant (9,646 inhabitants in 2016; 23,440 ha)
is located 350 km south-west of Québec, 130 km north-west of Montreal, and 150
km east of Ottawa. The municipality was established on 22 November 2000 as the
merger of the former municipalities of Saint-Jovite (est. 1917), Saint-Jovite-Paroisse
(est. 1879), Mont-Tremblant-Village (est. 17 May 1940) and Lac-Tremblant-Nord
(est. 1915). In 2004, Lac-Tremblant-Nord separated from Mont-Tremblant,
becoming the least populous municipality in Québec (42 inh.).
Named for
Mt. Tremblant (968 m), one of the highest peaks of the Laurentian Mountains,
Mont-Tremblant is mostly known as a sports resort. In 1938, Joseph Bondurand
Ryan founded Mount Tremblant Lodge; the next year, a chair ski lift and the
posh Mountain Lodge were inaugurated. In 1965, the founder's widow, Mary Ryan,
sold the estate, which was subsequently acquired by different private
operators. Station Mont-Tremblant / Mont-Tremblant Resort scatters now over
the mountain's four slopes. Out of its 269 ha, 188 ha are equipped with more
than 1,000 snow cannons, allowing practice of skiing all the year round.
Several athletes of international level trained at Mont-Tremblant, the
most famous of them being enrolled as "ambassadors" of the resort, including:
- the snowboarder Jasey-Jay Anderson (b. 1975), also blueberry farmer in Mont-Tremblant,
represented Canada in six successive Olympic Games, from 1998 to 2018, winning
the gold medal in parallel giant slalom at the 2010 Winter Olympics
(Vancouver). He also won the FIS Snowboard World Cup (overall) in four
successive seasons (200-2001 to 2003-2004).
- the alpine skier Erik Guay
(b. 1981), member of Club de ski du Mont Tremblant and still living in the
village, won the FIS World Championship in downhill (2011, Garmisch) and
super-G (2017, Saint-Moritz); in 2010, he won the FIS World Cup in super-G.
- the freestyle skier Brittany Phelan (b. 1991), silver medalist in ski cross
at the 2018 Winter Olympics (Pyeongchang).
