Description of the flags

The Jeux du Québec is an Olympiad type sport competition for young sportspeople in Quebec. It has occurred every year in one or 2 different cities (for summer and winter games) between 1970 and 1981 and every other year thereafter.

As the games are organised based on local sports associations, the participants compete for their home regions. These however are neither the administrative nor the traditional regions of Quebec (though some bear their names and roughly follow their borders) but are rather drawn to create a certain equality in terms of population (for example, the administrative region of Montreal is divided into 3 regions for the purpose of the games). The regions are:

  • Abitibi-Témiscamingue
  • Bourassa
  • Capitale-Nationale
  • Centre-du-Québec
  • Chaudière-Appalaches
  • Côte-Nord
  • Est-du-Québec
  • Estrie
  • Lac-Saint-Louis
  • Lanaudière
  • Laurentides
  • Laval
  • Mauricie
  • Montréal
  • Outaouais
  • Richelieu-Yamaska
  • Rive-Sud
  • Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean
  • Sud-Ouest
As most of the regions have no real distinct cultures for the reasons described above, flags used by supporters and during parades or medal ceremonies are, unfortunately, quite bland: a bicoloured flag with a recoloured versions of the Games logo (inverting the colours of the field). one such can be seen here (the Montreal table tennis team): http://public.dm1.livefilestore.com

As far as I can tell, there are no particular significance linking the colours to the regions (though the green and grey of the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean one could have been taken from 2 of the 4 colours of the unofficial Saguenay flag).

The games flag itself is simply the logo (pale blue/orange) on a white field: http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net

The official website (only in French) can be seen here: http://www.jeuxduquebec.com/. Note that the flags use some unusual colours, I have tried to stick to websafe as much as possible but some had to be adapted.
