Municipality

Dunham is a city in MRC de Brome-Missisquoi.
The town of Durham (3,524 inhabitants in 2020; 20,099 ha) is located close to the border with the USA, 100 km south-west of Montreal.
The town of Dunham was established on 25 September 1971 as the merger of the canton of Dunham (est. in 1855) and the village of Dunham (est. in 1867).

Durham is self-styled Lower-Canada's first canton, having been granted in 1796 by Lord Dorchester to Thomas Dunn (1729-1818) and his 34 associates. Dunn served as Governor of Lower Canada from 1805 to 1807; he founded the Dow brewery in 1790.

In 1911, Elizabeth Ann Beach created in Dunham Quebec's first Women's Institute, on the model of the one established in Stoney Creek (Hamilton, Ontario). This prompted Macdonald College, now associated to McGill University, to establish such institutes all over Quebec, as Homemakers Clubs of Quebec. In 1919, the Women's Institute were organized at the provincial level, Elizabeth Ann Beach being elected vice-president, then president, of the organization.

Quebec's first creamery, and Canada's second one, was established in 1866 in Dunham by Benjamin S. Martin. Mostly processing milk supplied by local farmers, the creamery was acquired in 1918 by Leon G. Rows, who oriented production towards butter and ice-creams. The company was sold to Laiterie Chaignon in 1961.

Chester Allen Arthur (1829-1886), 21st President of the USA (1881-1885), was born in Vermont from an Anglo-Irish that had settled in Dunham. Arthur was elected Vice-President in 1880, ticketing with James A. Garfield,, and succeeded him after his assassination. During the election, his opponents challenged the eligibility of Arthur, claiming he was not born in the USA, which was debunked.

City flag

Two flags appear to be in use.
An indoor flag is white, with the arms towards the hoist and the text "Ville de Dunham" towards the fly.

The arms of Dunham are "Quarterly by a cross sable, 1. Argent three trefoils vert, 2. Or a fleur-de-lis azure, 3. Vert a tree or, 4. Azure a barbel argent. The shield surmounted by a mural crown or masoned sable and supported by two autumn maple branches crossed in base superimposed by a scroll or inscribed 'ADVITAS ET VOLUNTAS' in letters sable".

The trefoils are a tribute to Sit Thomas Dunn, the town's namesake, who was of Irish origin.
The fleur-de-lis recalls that Dunham is part of the province of Quebec.
The tree symbolizes Dunham's enchanting site.
The barbel, as an heraldic fish, represents Lake Selby (1,200 ha).
The mural crown is proper to towns.
The maple branches symbolizes Canada.
The Latin motto reads "Vivid Desire and Willingness".
